August 29th ..... MAKE and TAKE ....

.
.

ISLE OF MANN ROOF TILE PATTERN

IN PROGRESS ... Roof Tile Block

In this make and take you will learn how the hand piece the ISLE OF MANN ROOF TILE block.  It can be made by machine at home.

Traditionally the Isle of Mann Roof Tile block was measured by the maker’s hand and fingers.  They decided in the size of the block and tore or cut the fabric so their backing fabric the center and strips were all the same size.  I will have a mod board with the technique demonstrate this traditional method at next guild meeting.  No batting was used.  Traditionally wool, linen, linsey-woolsey and other household fabrics and scraps were used to make these quilts.  They were hand stitched.  This block started in England in the 1820s to 30s and migrated to this country.

BRING WITH YOU: Bring a backing fabric a fat quarter we will explore measuring and cutting blocks in the traditional method. Traditionally the block sizes were about 8 to 10 inches finished.   A piece of fabric your choice of size and color for the center block.

Strips of fabric: 2 inches if you want to make a small block (under 8 inches finished.)   If your block is larger then 8 inches you should consider strips 2.5 inches in width. ( I use left over jelly roll strips)

Thread… any sturdy sewing thread will do. Do a snap test to check it strength.  The original quilters did not have fancy threads.  Pepper Cory  recommended PRECENCIA 40 wt thread.  I will also demonstrate a European method of HAND STITCHING used in areas where sewing machines were unavailable.

Make and Take Coasters

Anne is bringing the scraps .... YOU just have to bring needles and thread.

70 ways to set Half Square Triangles:

Martha changed techniques from paper piecing to half square triangle designs.  Martha apologizes and said,  "Unfortunately, I am unable to carry my sewing machine, so no supplies on your part are needed I would like to demonstrate 70 different half square triangle designs, but I don't think there will be time to show that many designs.   So, I will show you as many different designs as time allows."

This is a great project to use 6.5 inch charms from our exchange.

FOUR CORNERS and MAKE & TAKE are coming

.
.

FOUR CORNERS is coming to DESQG for the  June meeting.

As we have so many new members I am taking the time to explain the event.

There will be modules set up around the guild hall where demonstrations will be given for a quilt block or project or a specific technique.  Usually these mini lessons help teach new quilters and reinforce skills of long time quilters.

The sessions last about 15 to 20 minutes each.  We ask that if you attend a session that you do not talk during the demo.

Questions can be asked at the end of the session and they are greatly appreciated.
The sessions are taught by guild members who volunteer.  We really appreciate their willingness and time spent to set up these demonstrations.
.
.

MAKE and TAKE is scheduled for the August meeting.

Members will need to SIGN UP for  a MAKE and TAKE  activity in advance.  At sign up there will be a sample of what will be taught in the demonstration The member will be given instructions to any preparation that needs to be done prior to the MAKE AND TAKE event.  The guild hopes that there will be classes to encompass everyone interest.
If you are willing to teach a  4  corners  or a MAKE and Take  session let a board member know.  We will probably have more of these activities in the future.  If you have ideas for other guild activities let the board know and we will see if they can be implemented.
