Old Quilts Workshop ..... with BETSY KOSS from BOYNE CITY

Betsy says quilt history is a passion of hers.  She loves to investigate old fabrics and vintage blocks matching them to currently available reproduction fabrics to make a quilt.  She has been gifted vintage blocks by friends and buying them at antique fairs and now has a backlog of quilt tops and blocks to show.

She considers herself a traditional quilter but often takes antique blocks and puts them in unusual settings designing her own quilts.  She has been teaching how to mark quilts, how to fix old quilt tops to retain their value, and various quilting techniques BIG STITCH hand quilting will also be taught as part of the workshop.

You will learn how to use your old blocks, unfinished tops and vintage quilts in a quilt.  If your stymied and do not know what to do Linda and the other students will help you realize the possibilities of your blocks.   Linda's workshop is a wonderful opportunity to learn about designing a quilt without the use of a pattern.

STAR BLOCK for the GUILD's STAR PROJECT

 

FYI:   I put my colors incorrect for the VETERAN'S CHALLENGE.  It was requested the star points be BLUE and the center square be RED  .... GUESS WHO IS MAKING THIS BLOCK AGAIN!  I need to take better notes.

Our current guild challenges is to make star blocks for donation quilts.   After all we are the EVENING STARS .... so we should make stars.   One of our members is demonstrating various types of stars and how to construct them.  

We have two request for stars .... 

Red star points, blue center with white background fabrics.  

The second request for star blocks is eye spy centers of various novelty prints.  

Any type of star block can be submitted but we need the blocks to be 12.5 inches / finished 12 inch blocks. 

At the last meeting the star points were made using hour glass patches.   The following instructions is for making hour glass patches to fit a 12. 5 inch block.   I went on line to find the formula for  quarter square triangles to make our star points.  

THE finished patches needed measure 4 inches ( 4.5 inch prior to assembly in the block.)

To make an hour glass patch you need TWO patches equal to 5-1/4 inch patches.   ( I made my patches at 5.5 inches as I like to make my blocks bigger then trim them to desired size. )  To make the star you need 4 patches.  Put the back ground ( white) right sides together with red patches to make the points.

Star points are suppose to be BLUE with WHITE!

FORMULA:  FINISHED HOUR GLASS BLOCK plus 1 and 1/4 inch to cut the patches to make the block.
4 inch finished block plus 1-1/4 inch results in patches of 5 & 1/4 inch

This should work for any finished block size. 

Mark the patch from diagonal to diagonal on both corners.

Sew the seam along the diagonal a quarter inch away from the diagonal lines.  At the center of the block cross over to the other side of the diagonal  and sew a quarter inch away.   See the pictures below. 

Sew the second seam a quarter inch from the diagonal, cross over at the center then once again sew a quarter inch away from the other side of the diagonal. 

The picture to the right is the flip side of the patch, showing the stitching. 

   Cut on the diagonal from corner to corner on the patch in both directions.  Press the patches open to the dark side.                                                                                                                                                                                                               

I am missing a few pictures and will add them in when I have  re- shot them.

Sew two of the patches to form an hour glass.  Trim to the correct size.  Trim carefully or you will loose the quarter inch seam needed to maintain your star points.   

I lost the point on my star I will have to be better next time I make the block.

Lay out the 4.5 inch patches, once assembled it should equal a 12.5 inch block / 12 inch finished.

CENTER of the block is suppose to be RED for the VETERANS CHALLENGE.

I circled the tip that will be cut off once this star is assembled into the quilt.  I will have to be more careful with the next block.

WHAT TO EXPECT on QUILTO NIGHT - - -

PLEASE BRING MARKERS …. Beans, buttons, pennies, popcorn, bingo chips to the guild.  We have some markers but not enough for the entire guild.  

Guild members and guest can get 3 quilt cards when they check in.   For tonight’s, February 22, 2017 event, there is no charge for cards.  

Standard games of QUILTO will be played.  Horizontal, vertical and diagonal. 

There will be a cover all game toward the end of the evening / event.  

Once QUILTO is called, the card is checked then the player can collect their prize.

March board meeting has a change of venue

  The MARCH 7, 2017 meeting be changed to BIG BOY in  Imlay City at 1 pm.  This will only be for this one meeting in March.  

The board meeting is open to all members.   

     If you have an idea, a suggestion, or even a complaint we would like you to bring it to the board so it can be acted up.  We are trying to be open and accommodating to our members.

Linda was at our guild last in 2010, since then she has authored a book, and won awards at the national quilt shows.   I am anxious to find out what she has been up to .. her trunk shows are known to be outstanding.

DECEMBER 28TH CHRISTMAS PARTY

The December 28th is our Christmas , it is a pot luck .... everyone brings something good to eat. Bring festive table setting to make the night special... but paper plates and plastic ware will be available if you forget.




DIRTY SANTA at the Christmas Party. 

For those who wish to participate bring a $15 gift. In the past we had all types of gifts i.e. bath sets, china, sewing items, ( fabric should be QUILT SHOP QUALITY) notions, quilt books. ... anything of $15 value.... something you would like to get . 

The gifts will be placed in the center of the circle. When your card is drawn you get to select a gift from the center or steal a gift from another participate. GIFTS are frozen upon the third steal but they can be stolen twice before they are taken out of circulation...... and YES I love to steal gifts cause it make the activity fun.
