APRIL BLOTTO BLOCK - Log Cabin

.

ONE BLOCK FOR ONE CHANCE …. LIMIT OF FIVE CHANCES …
You can make more if you want

12.5 inch unfinished / 12 inch finished

Center:

LOG CABIN with a YELLOW 4 inch finished center ( patch 4.5in x 4.5 in) to allow applique, embroidery, fancy stitching or showing off free motion quilting skills.

LOG STRIPS are 2.5 inches in width … length are indicated on the picture below.

Colors:

Light side ….

White, white on white, cream, ecru, … tiny prints, dots, text as long as it is not overwhelming….. needs to read light.

Dark side ….
Medium dark to dark fabrics … traditional colors, deep jewel tones, batiks …. Reads more solid than print …. Save brights, novelty prints for another quilt.  Put lighter dark fabrics to the center and the darkest  strips to the out side as I think that gives a glow to the block.
 .
.
The beauty of light and dark sided log cabin blocks at it allows so many different setting styles …  field and farrows, barn raising, windows, chevron, sunshine and shadows… just to name a few.

MARCH BLOTTO BLOCKS - updated instruction

.
.

March’s Block is looking forward to
Memorial Day in May…..

So it is red, white and blue.

You will have to make 2 blocks to get the parts for each pinwheel so it spins correctly.  You will end up with a right spinning block and a left spinning block.

Red: (2 – 6’ squares)  &  (4 – 5 ½” squares)
Blue: (2 – 6” squares)   & (4– 5 ½” squares)
(White:4 – 6” squares)

This will make 8 pinwheel patches

Take all 4 white 6” squares and pair up with the Red and Blue 6” squares. Draw a diagonal line on the back and sew on both sides making a HST (half square triangle). Trim to 5 ½”, press to the darker fabric.

Take each Red 5 ½” square and match to a Blue & White HST. Draw a diagonal line on the back, (going across the seam). Sew on both sides of the line. Trim to 5”. Press to the solid fabric.

Repeat with the Blue 5 ½” squares and Red & White HST.

.
Tutorial: Split Quarter-Square Triangles   I found this web site helpful.

You will now have 8 Squares that you can place in the shape of a pinwheel.  Notice that you will have one turning right and one turning left.

CHARLIE suggests that we make 4 Blotto Blocks for April for 2 draws, one right and one left.

Put them together to make a lovely lap (or bigger) quilt.

Sign up on guild night to participate in the exchange The number of participants will be announced in the newsletter, in Facebook group and on this blog.  Please do not sign up unless you plan to comply.
·                     Three charms cut to 6-1/2 inches squares for each participant.  The charms should all be different in your collection.   The fabric must QUILT SHOP QUALITY, if there is any question of the quality of the fabric please do not donate the fabric. Be sure to remove salvages before you cut your patches.
·                     A theme for the fabrics will be announced in the newsletter and on this blog in advance (SEE BELOW.)
·                     Label your fabrics with your name, in some way to indicate you have turned in your charms.  This will make it easier for the coordinator to sort thru them for pick up.  I put my charms into a plastic baggy and write my name on it, but you can also just pin the charms together with a paper label on the charms.
·                     Pick up your charms at the end of the evening.  Show off the quilt you made from your haul in a future show and tell.
