NOVEMBER 30TH , GUILD AUCTION

IT is that time of year ..... auction time.  Members can clean out their sewing room and donate it to the auction.   Items will be bundled into a great collection of quilt items.

Once the tables are set up members will be able to buy tickets  4 /$1.00 .... BRING YOUR MONEY and ADDRESS LABELS.  Members can then put tickets in the paper bag that is hung in front of the items for auction.

Drawing of the tickets are after the break.  Our lucky winners can then take their prizes home. This auction is a great fund raiser for the guild and everyone has a great time.   

The other item on the agenda is elections of officers... We do have a slate but if you want to volunteer for any of the positions please notify any of the current guild officers.

KEEPSAKE CHALLENGE QUILTS EXHIBIT > OCTOBER 26TH at 6 pm ....

THIS IS GOING TO BE A FUN EVENT ....


October  26th  – Traveling Exhibit from Keepsake Quilts.  

           There will be approximately 20 quilts from the KEEPSAKE CHALLENGE for out  viewing pleasure.   These quilts are approximately wall size 30 x 30 inches in size.  The board members are planning some quilt related  activities to round out the evenings entertainment.

           NO PHOTOGRAPHS of the quilts are allowed by KEEPSAKE .... so if you miss this meeting you will be out of luck.

Attention Guild Members:

It has been request that all guild members wear a name tag to promote awareness among the members.  Our guild has grown and not everyone knows every one else in the guild.  Wearing of name tags will help members acknowledge and get to know one another. 

Membership booklets are being printed and will soon be available for distribution.

 Carole Carroll will be the guest speaker JUNE 29th.  To make her feel at home the guild is to wear RED, WHITE and Blue.   

 Miracle Quilts is group of quilters, sewers and hard working woman of all ages who come together once a month at Independence Village in Oxford. Their mission is to create patriotic quilts to present to our wounded troops at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C,. for our Michigan VA hospitals and for our homeless vets and for Troops currently serving our great country!! 


 Miracle Quilts was founded by Carole Carroll in March 2009.  The volunteer sewers meet the second Saturday of every month at Independence Village, 701 Market Street, Oxford, Michigan. The hours are from 10am to 3pm.  The group also meets at the Oxford Public Library during the week. The dates fluctuate due to the library’s schedule.

CREATE YOUR OWN PAINTED BLOCK to hang on your house, barn, garage or storage unit.

Pre primed boards and paint are supplied.  You will be shown how to draft, tape and paint your block with careful attention to detail.  Workshop will last about 4 hours plus clean up time.  Finished block will be 2 x 2 feet perfect for smaller buildings.  Suzi has pattern suggestion or bring your own… for the first project it is best to keep it simple.  Paint, foam brushes, colored pencils and other tools needed will be supplied.

Home: on the road in her RV somewhere near YOU!

Author of the book,  “Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement.”  Suzi travels full time speaking to quilt guilds and other groups about barn quilts and the quilt trail movement.

Suzi will take you on a journey along the quilt trail, beginning with the very first barn quilt, which stemmed from Donna Sue Groves and her wish to honor her mother’s quilting art. Suzi’s hour-long presentation features over one hundred stunning photographs of barn quilts, some of which rival cloth quilts in their intricacy. You will hear stories of some of the individuals who have painted quilt blocks to honor loved ones or their local culture, along with a few humorous anecdotes.

The presentation is both informative and entertaining, as Suzi explores the way in which our quilting heritage takes on new meaning as this movement continues to expand.

The beautiful Barn Quilt photos and their poignant stories were brought to life so eloquently by Suzi. I highly recommend Suzi’s Barn Quilt presentation to your guild. Anyone who enjoys quilts will love her presentation; add in the topics of barns both old and new, along with beautiful photos of rural America and you have a program that is sure to please!

Suzi’s presentation was well planned — a wonderful slide show of many of the barns she had visited, accompanied by excerpts from her book. Her narrative about how she became interested in barn quilts was entertaining and Suzi shared some very heartwarming stories of the people whose barn quilts she visited.

UP COMING ACTIVITIES

January's date was incorrectly posted earlier .... it is tonight January 27 at 6pm

January’s 27TH  meeting will be a trunk show of the board’s quilting projects. We are including the heads of committees also. We have such talent in our guild. Please plan to attend and cheer these gals on. We will be having our regular show and tell also. The gals who attend the quilt camp at Bear Lake, please bring some of your projects and tell us about camp.

February’s  24TH meeting will be a charity sew. In June, Carole Carroll head of Miracle Quilts will be our speaker. So it was decided to sew some quilts to give to her. To help us with this sew, we are asking for orphan blocks, yardage, and charm squares. There will be some 12 1/2 inch patterns available at the January guild meeting. You make take them home and sew. Since we only have about 1 ½ hours to work on them at the meeting, you will probably need to finish them at home or with your sewing group.

 Quilts of any size are appreciated. So if you’re organizing your sewing rooms, keep this charity in mind. Want to get rid of your UFO’s? Bring those too. Someone else might enjoying finishing them.

Safe House
The Empty Bobbins will be collecting bed pillows for Safe House for January. Pillowcases would be welcome too. The toys we collected for Nov. were taken to Safe House and appreciated. Thank you.

For our February Meeting the guild is to make quilts for  MIRACLE  QUILTS    Carol Carroll organizer of Miracle Quilts  will be speaking in June and the plan is to present the quilts to her then.   MIRACLE QUILTS in the past brought their quilts to WOUNDED WARRIORS, WALTER REED HOSPITAL and various veterans organizations in Michigan.

The quilts can be any style, any size or any pattern.....

• w/chair / lap at least  48x48 inches
• Throws - estimate size   72 x 60 inches
• Larger quilts accepted too.

NEEDED: 

SASHING MATERIAL NEEDED …. 1-1/2 to 2 yard would be needed for the average 72 to 60 inch quilt.   Can be yardage or assorted pieces of fabric in the same colors.

Patriotic  and / or Bright cheerful colors are especially desirable….

Bring a machine, basic sewing supplies.   An extension cord would be helpful.   Cutting and ironing stations will be set up.  There are all kinds of jobs for all kind of quilters…. If you can we will also need quilters to take the quilts home and do the FREE MOTION QUILTING ….

SOME quilt kits will be available at the February Sew In.   Any style acceptable.   We would like the  quilts back at or before the June meeting when they will be donated.

Board Meetings will be the TUESDAY after the regular quilt meeting at 1pm at Little Cesar's Restaurant in Davison.   Next meeting will be January 5th.   I hope to post monthly updates to this blog.    

The guild board members have asked that IF any member has any issues, concerns, ideas for the guild that Leslie be notified ( check the guild membership book for her phone number)  She will put it on the agenda otherwise it will be added to the end of the meeting.   If you can not attend the board meeting please contact Leslie anyways and the board will work with you.

Rules for the MONTHLY 2-1/2 inch Strip Exchange

New Monthly Fabric Exchange – 2 ½” strips

Lots of quilters voted for this idea at the October meeting.  This replaces the Birthday Fat Quarter Club.  The more quilters who participate, the more fun it will be.

Here are the rules:
·    No monthly commitment, no sign up sheet.
·    Quilt shop quality fabric, clean and pressed
·    2 ½” strips by WOF (width of fabric)
·    Put 5 strips in a baggie with your name on it.  The strips don’t have to be the same fabric, just the correct monthly theme.
·    Drop off the baggy when you arrive at the guild meeting on the table by the front door. 
·    During the break, take a different baggy than the one you brought.
·    If you want to exchange more than one baggy, great!  Bring 3, take 3, etc.

·    If you really want to get rid of those leftover strips from completed projects, you can also contribute extra strips, not in a baggy.  These strips will be used in donation quilts, if enough are donated.  This is a great way to bust your stash.

Information from the  GUILD BOARD

There are several items on the agenda that remain from the missed November meeting:

December 30th meeting – It’s our annual Christmas Potluck and Dirty Santa Gift Exchange!

Bring a dish to share, your own place setting and silverware, your own beverage if you want something other than coffee or tea.  Wear loose waist bands and bring a big plate!  We will have election of officers, raffle quilt drawing, show and tell, 50/50 drawing and door prizes after we eat of course. 

Then we’ll have our Dirty Santa gift exchange.  If you want to participate, bring a wrapped gift.  It can be store bought, worth about $20.00, or something hand made.  We put all the gifts in a big pile, and the fun begins.  

 Eating starts at 6:30 p.m.

Vote for either Mary or Leslie for president.  The one with the most votes will act as president and the other will act as vice president.  (This is their idea.)  Thank you to these quilters for volunteering to be an officer.

Raffle quilt drawing:

Since our meeting was cancelled last month, the drawing will be held this month.  We need the people who have not turned in their tickets (ticket stubs with money, or all unsold tickets) to please do so at the beginning of the meeting, even if you didn’t sell the tickets. 

This is very important for 2 reasons:  The MI Gaming Board requires us to have and keep all unsold tickets to prove that we aren’t cheating on the money we make.  Also, we want everyone who bought a ticket to have a chance to win.

These are the quilters who have not turned in their tickets yet.  If you cannot attend the meeting please get the tickets to someone who will attend.  Or call any board member and make arrangements to turn in tickets.  Thank you.

Safehouse Donations: 

This month is diapers.  Buy the larger sizes, since they usually do not have a need for the smaller sizes, thank goodness.

Beth Ferrier has moved out of state and is no longer able to give a lecture at our September meeting.  We will host our PAPER BAG AUCTION.   I have posted information in several posts.
