The Trunk Show of PHYLLIS JACOBS from BIG RAPIDS

.
.
October 25, 2017   -

Speaker:    Phyllis Jacobs Trunk Show from BIG RAPIDS
I had a delightful phone conversation with Phyllis.  She described her quilting as colorfully eclectic.  She loves bright colors, complex and challenging piecing and non -repetitive block construction.  She gets a lot of inspiration from her favorite quilt artists Jenny Byers,  Paula Nadelstern and Judy Niemeyer.  She says she has a 100 projects to pick from and plans to bring her favorite quilts.

The next meeting is May 31, 2017  Come and bring a friend!

From The President:

Mothers Day is a celebration honoring the Mother of the family, as well as Motherhood, Maternal bonds, and the influence of Mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May!  In the United States, celebration of Mothers Day began in the early 20th century! So, Happy Mothers Day!

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those that died in service of the United States of America. This year we remember on May 29, 2017. I am proud to call myself an America, even with all the turmoil going on! Wouldn't want to live anywhere else. How about you?

I am getting antsy to get outside and tend to my garden! For the last several years I have been buying perennials. Oh how I love when they start to pop up! It's like they're popping up every year to say "Hello" come outside and enjoy the beauty! Aaah, the sun beating down on my face is magnificent. Finally, cold season has passed. The neighbors are outside. Yay! I miss seeing the life that you see in the summer. But it's here and I am outside enjoying it! You know, pulling weeds, planting bulbs, trying to get the bleeding heart to grow! This will be my third try. Any hints out there? Oh yes, and mowing the lawn! Are you laughing yet? Too much fun!

I have been piecing my quilts like crazy, I'm inspired every time I see your quilts! You folks are talented, don't you know it! I want to thank all of you for your continued support and patience while I was healing from my surgery! I look out into the audience of members and there are so many kind faces and smiles! Whew! It boosts my confidence. THANK YOU! You're the best . I am getting to know more and more of you each month and I should. I was trying to figure out how we could mix it up and get to know each other, you know so we could support one another in good times and bad!

Ideas are always welcome!

Betsy Koss was so informative! I enjoyed her view on quilts! That big stitch quilting is so interesting and looks phenomenal ! I hope you were pleased with her show too! I think we can always learn something new from every speaker!

President’s Challenge:
This month I am asking for your red, white and blue projects! It's Memorial Day, so I thought it would be fitting! I am hoping to get 15 or MORE quilts , or purses, or table runners up there! After all, this is a QUILT  guild! Hahaha! If you need help to hold your quilts, have no fear we have some ladies that have volunteered to hold the quilts while we talk! Isn't that awesome? So, remember my goal is 15 ! Don't let me down!

Star Challenge

The star challenge DEADLINE is the May meeting.  May 31, 2017.

Leslie’s stars : She is putting together an I Spy quilt . It can be any color, as long as the center is a fussy cut , person, place or thing . Everyone likes to play I spy.

Anne’s stars: Anne is putting the stars together for the wounded warriors. She is

Asking that the center be red, the points be blue and the background white.

Charlie’s stars: Charlie is putting together quilts for charity. She is taking any

Color or pattern that you feel like making. She said she will make it work. I kind of think she will. So, keep those stars coming in. Charlie only had 11 stars , maybe we can sneak a few extra to help her out!

We welcome visitors to all of our meetings. The guild charges a fee of $7.00 for non-members when we have a speaker.

Our speaker for May is Mary Bajcz
Her trunk show is Scrap Happy Serendipity quilts. About Mary Bajcz…as stated on her website: I’ve made quilts for about 35 years and am constantly delighted by the endless ways fabrics can be combined into a beautiful and useful quilt-art that can keep you warm. I enjoy the serendipity in quilt making. I start out with an idea, assemble a pile of fabrics, start cutting and sewing and watch to see if good things happen. They usually do. I also make smaller art quilts, reversible silk jackets, and loads of handbags. About12 years ago I discovered “free cut piecing”, a technique that lets me “draw” with my rotary cutter. It’s my artistic voice!
It sounds like a fun lecture! Bring a friend.

Our speaker for June is Pam Anchatz, traditional quilts, hand quilting and hand piecing.  It looks like we are going to be enjoying a lot of different talents in the upcoming months. I am looking forward to learning new things, how about you?

Hospitality for May from Sharon Muston
I thank all the members that contributed to Aprils hospitality table. The members who have signed up for May are Eva Nass, Karen Rykhus, Kim Carter, Colleen Dibble, and Sandra Martin.
                                                         Thank you, Sharon

WANTED- NEWSLETTER EDITOR.
We need someone to send out a newsletter to the membership once a month!
If you are interested, please talk to Mary Vibert or call at
586-489-0269! Please consider this!

Remember, there is a suggestion box at the front table. I will be happy to check out your ideas. Thanks.

If we don’t get a volunteer to write the newsletter, I am afraid there won’t be a newsletter in the future. Think about it. It takes everyone to keep the guild running smoothly.

The BOARD meeting is June 6, 2017 at 10:00a.m. Tuesday.
Please note the time change.

We will be meeting at Big Boy’s in Imlay City, please join us! Everyone is welcome.

BRAIN STORMING with BETSY KOSS

The project Betsy brought to demonstrate BIG STITCH marking and stitching.

Last night we had a great lecture and trunk show from Betsy Koss.  She discussed her quilt projects she has made from antique quilt tops and antique orphan blocks.  Today, five of the Evening Star Quilt Guild members, met up for workshop with Betsy Koss at Linda's Quilt Shop in Davison.  We brought our problem projects so we could all brainstorm as a group, grabbing fabric from the shop to evaluate our blocks... which colors worked best,  print or solids,  what added to / enhanced our projects what detracted.  The project ranged from finds from garage sales, estate sales and antique shops, to family UFOs or heirloom projects, to abandon blocks from early quilting classes.  Each project was laid out and critiqued to evaluate the most effective methods to finish the projects.

BRAIN STORMING the 1930 quilt top gift

This workshop was such a positive experience.   Evaluating each project, considering how to best preserve the project's uniqueness, history, how to enhance what someone (often a relative) else has made; helped us the attendees to expand our knowledge and creativity.  I especially enjoyed actually having the chance to look at fabrics, quilt tops, quilt blocks from 1800s and early 1900s.  I enjoyed working with the other quilters and I learned from their thoughts and evaluation of the various projects.

The last hour of the workshop we learned how to do BIG STITCH to finish our projects.  How to mark the project, to start the lines of stitching, burying knots and do an actual line of stitching.  We had all brought a practice batt to test out the technique.

I am posting some of the pictures Alice and I took for your enjoyment.

APRIL 26, 2017 - - BETSY KOSS LECTURE, TRUNK SHOW and WORKSHOP

GREAT MEETING TONIGHT ...

Charlie gave a great Power Point presentation on PRE-SASHING BLOCKS to result in easier assembly of a quilt top.  I am looking forward to trying the technique with a sashed quilt.  I especially liked Charlies D.Y.I. binding holder.  Charlie gave me a copy of her presentation on a flash drive so I will be posting it here on the blog sometime in the future.

COPING STRIPS to bring a block to size

Our guest speaker was Betsy Koss from Boyne City.  She belongs to the guild in Petosky, and is a former member of the Birmingham GREAT LAKES HERITAGE QUILT GUILD.  She brought a couple of her guild members with her for a girl's night out.  They were really fun at the dinner we had at LUCKY'S, we talked so much we were almost late for the lecture set up...

She came to our guild and showed us her quilt collection.   Betsy has been collecting antique quilts, antique quilt tops and quilt blocks from antique shops and fairs for several years and multiple sources.  She brought over 30 projects she has worked on.  She discussed how she cleans the antiques quilts and tops, and also discussed how she marked them for quilting.  When each project was presented she was able to identify the approximate age of the quilt by the fabrics in the quilts.  Her antiques ranged from the early 1800s thru the 1970s and 80s.  She hand quilted many of the quilt tops and also used BIG STITCH QUILTING.  She gave a brief explanation of the threads used and the techniques for the best results.  Betsy also graciously answered all our questions during the lecture and questions by individual members after the lecture.  It was a really fun night and if you missed it ... you missed a great time.

BETSY's LITTLE TRAVERSE BAY QUILT GUILD

I am posting several of the pictures I took at the meeting but  you really need to see them up close and personal because my pictures do not do justice to the lovely projects.  Sorry, but Betsy showed us so many quilts I had trouble keeping track of which projects were made from quilt tops and which were from block collections.  I tried to pick the pictures of her older projects.

I took over 50 pictures of Betsy's projects and hope to get more tomorrow when I go to her workshop.  We will be brainstorming our own projects and learning how to do the BIG STITCH.
