January 2013: Ami Simms Lecture

On Wednesday, January 30th  Ami Simms will be hanging out with the Evening Star Quilters

Davison-Richfield Senior Center

10135 Lapeer Road, Davison, Michigan

The meeting starts at 6:30 PM, with doors opening at 6:00 PM.  Visitors/guests are welcome to attend the meeting and Ami’s lecture, called “Living With Quilts:  A Survival Guide.” A guest fee of $5 goes towards the cost of the speaker, and we look forward to having you join us!  For questions, contact Caron Mosey, Guild President.

Living With Quilts: A Survival Guide:

Learn creative coping strategies for quilters, but not necessarily for their families. Topics include how to pad your house (quilt display and storage), appropriate more studio space (why stop with the spare bedroom?), eliminate pesky distractions (cooking and cleaning), increase storage capacity (batting goes in the oven), and the best way to deal with the guilt of UFOs (ignore it)!

For more information on Ami Simms, you can visit her website at http://amisimms.com, her blog at http://amisimms.wordpress.com/ and the website for the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative

First Presbyterian Church Quilt Exhibit, Flint, Michigan

First Presbyterian Church in Flint, Michigan will be a host site September 13 - September 15, 2012. The show is part of the Flint Festival of Quilts, an annual Flint quilt exhibit centered around the Michigan Quilt Artists Invitational held at the Greater Flint Arts Council.

First Presbyterian Church’s Liturgical Arts Ministry has created space to display quilts.  We are currently seeking quilters wishing to display their work as an expression of faith, a shaper of faith, or an inspiration to faith.  This year’s theme is “Fabrics of Life.

If you would like to register to exhibit a quilt at First Presbyterian Church, please fill out this entry form <== Click here!

*Liturgical Arts Ministry at First Presbyterian Church Flint
PURPOSE

Created in God’s image, we create.  Among the things we know for sure about God is that God is ceaselessly creative. And we know that God is a very, very good artist.

Human beings are created in the very image of God.  God fashioned the clay figures of a man and a woman.  As God blew breath into those figures that divine creative spirit was blown into humanity and that spirit dwells in each of us. This aspect of divine breath is engaged through the creative or artistic process.

Art has the ability to connect us uniquely, incarnationally, with God’s spirit. In the creative process we engage more deeply the deep meaning and mystery of our faith.

The Liturgical Arts Ministry hopes to encourage our congregation’s ability to engage art as an expression of faith, a shaper of faith, and an inspiration to faith.

Quilt School: New feature in our monthly newsletter!!!

You’re never too old or experienced to learn something new.  Welcome to “Quilt School,” where each month you’ll pick up a new nugget of quilty information you might not have known.  This month’s topic: Two Color Quilts.

Traditionally, the name “two color quilt” really meant “two fabric quilt,” with both fabrics being solids.  The now-famous red and white quilt exhibit held recently at the American Folk Art Museum in New York is a perfect example of the two color quilt. Another example is this indigo blue and white “Restored Pinwheel” quilt, assembled from antique blocks and quilted in 1983 by your editor. But two color quilts do not have to include white.  They can be any two fabrics put together to create one quilt… even cheddar and blue!

Even though a scrappy quilt might pull a variety of materials from two different colors, remember that a scrap quilt does not follow the traditional definition of a two color quilt.  I know… it’s confusing!
