*Liturgical Arts Ministry at First Presbyterian Church Flint
PURPOSE

Created in God’s image, we create.  Among the things we know for sure about God is that God is ceaselessly creative. And we know that God is a very, very good artist.

Human beings are created in the very image of God.  God fashioned the clay figures of a man and a woman.  As God blew breath into those figures that divine creative spirit was blown into humanity and that spirit dwells in each of us. This aspect of divine breath is engaged through the creative or artistic process.

Art has the ability to connect us uniquely, incarnationally, with God’s spirit. In the creative process we engage more deeply the deep meaning and mystery of our faith.

The Liturgical Arts Ministry hopes to encourage our congregation’s ability to engage art as an expression of faith, a shaper of faith, and an inspiration to faith.

Quilt School: New feature in our monthly newsletter!!!

You’re never too old or experienced to learn something new.  Welcome to “Quilt School,” where each month you’ll pick up a new nugget of quilty information you might not have known.  This month’s topic: Two Color Quilts.

Traditionally, the name “two color quilt” really meant “two fabric quilt,” with both fabrics being solids.  The now-famous red and white quilt exhibit held recently at the American Folk Art Museum in New York is a perfect example of the two color quilt. Another example is this indigo blue and white “Restored Pinwheel” quilt, assembled from antique blocks and quilted in 1983 by your editor. But two color quilts do not have to include white.  They can be any two fabrics put together to create one quilt… even cheddar and blue!

Even though a scrappy quilt might pull a variety of materials from two different colors, remember that a scrap quilt does not follow the traditional definition of a two color quilt.  I know… it’s confusing!

Grosse Pointe Farms: Free lecture by Ami Simms Feb. 16, 2012

Ami Simms will be presenting a free lecture called "Quilting & Caring: The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative" at Christ Church (61 Grosse Pointe Boulevard, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236) on Thursday, February 16th at 6:30 p.m. It is open to the public.

From Ami:
“Statistically, one in three people know someone with Alzheimer's. For one in 10, that person is a caring for someone with Alzheimer's. Because I tell the story of my caregiving and advocacy experience through quilts, I think this presentation would be of interest to you. There will be a question and answer time at the end, and I will be bringing small format art quilts to sell. All profits fund Alzheimer's research.

The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative is an all-volunteer national charity. Working with quilters throughout the US, we have raised more than $690,000 for Alzheimer's research. I am a quilter. My mother had Alzheimer's.”

2011 Quilt Challenge Reveal

In early summer of 2011, the Evening Star Quilters were given a challenge.  The rules were:

  • The quilt had to be a completed (quilted and bound) 25" square quilt including a quilt label.
  • You could only use a total of 2 fabrics ‐ the fat quarter given and an additional fabric of your choosing.
  • You could have it quilted by another quilter if you'd like. You had to give credit on the quilt label for the quilter.
  • You were welcome to embellish the piece. You could use
ribbons, beads, buttons, decorative threads, etc. Ribbons
could not be used as a third fabric.
  • You could make your piece using any method of quilting you
like. Applique, piecing, foundation piecing, fussy cutting,
    etc.

Everyone participating in the challenge was given  a fat quarter from the same bolt of fabric.

At the December 2011 meeting the quilts were revealed.  They were gorgeous, and everyone deserved to be called a winner!

Guild members voted for their favorite quilts, and the following ladies won Viewer’s Choice:

1st place:  Shirley Miles            2nd place:  Mary Seymour

Great job, everyone!  And what fun we had!

2012 Guild Challenge: Marvelous Miniature Stars!

Marvelous Miniature Stars!
The challenge this year is to make a quilted piece that features star block/blocks. The challenge is that the blocks used in the quilt need to be 3" square or smaller!

This is a great opportunity to work on your piecing, pressing and appliqué skills.

Here's the challenge info:
  •          Contest starts January 1, 2011 and will end at the May 30th meeting. Viewers will choose 2 quilts for 1st and 2nd place. Winner will receive a gift certificate to a local quilt shop.
  •          3" square (or smaller) Star Blocks. Any kind of star/stars can be used.
  •          You can use multiple sizes of blocks – but they can be no larger than 3".
  •          Can be pieced, appliquéd, foundation pieced or any combination of all of these.
  •          You can use any fabrics/colors you like.
  •          The quilt can be any shape you want – as long as it fits in the perimeter requirements.
  •          The minimum size of the quilted piece is 54" perimeter. (Example: a 12" x 15" rectangle equals a 54" perimeter - 12+12+15+15=54).
  •          The maximum size of the quilted piece is 144" perimeter. (Example: a 36" x 36" square equals a 144" perimeter - 36+36+36+36=144).
  •          You can add borders if you like.
  •          Please add a hanging sleeve and a quilt label to the back.
  •          Quilt must be quilted and bound. You are welcome to have it professionally quilted – just be sure to give credit to the quilter on the quilt label.

We hope you will enjoy this challenge! Because we're using stars as the feature – these quilts will be eligible for the quilt show at the Longway Planetarium! The sky's the limit – so be creative!
