August 29th ..... MAKE and TAKE ....

ISLE OF MANN ROOF TILE PATTERN

IN PROGRESS ... Roof Tile Block

In this make and take you will learn how the hand piece the ISLE OF MANN ROOF TILE block.  It can be made by machine at home.

Traditionally the Isle of Mann Roof Tile block was measured by the maker’s hand and fingers.  They decided in the size of the block and tore or cut the fabric so their backing fabric the center and strips were all the same size.  I will have a mod board with the technique demonstrate this traditional method at next guild meeting.  No batting was used.  Traditionally wool, linen, linsey-woolsey and other household fabrics and scraps were used to make these quilts.  They were hand stitched.  This block started in England in the 1820s to 30s and migrated to this country.

BRING WITH YOU: Bring a backing fabric a fat quarter we will explore measuring and cutting blocks in the traditional method. Traditionally the block sizes were about 8 to 10 inches finished.   A piece of fabric your choice of size and color for the center block.

Strips of fabric: 2 inches if you want to make a small block (under 8 inches finished.)   If your block is larger then 8 inches you should consider strips 2.5 inches in width. ( I use left over jelly roll strips)

Thread… any sturdy sewing thread will do. Do a snap test to check it strength.  The original quilters did not have fancy threads.  Pepper Cory  recommended PRECENCIA 40 wt thread.  I will also demonstrate a European method of HAND STITCHING used in areas where sewing machines were unavailable.

70 ways to set Half Square Triangles:

Martha changed techniques from paper piecing to half square triangle designs.  Martha apologizes and said,  "Unfortunately, I am unable to carry my sewing machine, so no supplies on your part are needed I would like to demonstrate 70 different half square triangle designs, but I don't think there will be time to show that many designs.   So, I will show you as many different designs as time allows."
